The Winter Olympics in Beijing kicked off amid covid-19 concerns and political tensions. There were 21 new covid cases reported among participants and personnel on Thursday. Several countries’ diplomats will be boycotting the games, including Friday’s opening ceremony, because of China’s human-rights abuses. A spokesman said “all of this so-called boycott banter will be extinguished” once the Olympic flame is lit.
